A2 Science in Society Textbook

Similar to the AS book …
Many of the features of the A2 textbook are the same as in the AS book:
- One chapter per topic in the specification, designed to show how the science explanations and ideas about how science works are illustrated by the chosen contexts
- Explanatory ‘boxes’ covering key science explanations and the new ideas about how science works
- Key term boxes explaining new terminology
- Illustrations in full colour including photographs, diagrams, graphs and charts
- Lots of questions in the margins of the text helping readers to engage with the text and highlighting the important ideas
- Review questions at the end of each chapter asking students to show that they understand the science explanations and can illustrate or recognise the ideas about how science works in the context of the topic
The book is published by Heinemann (May 2009). It is possible to order inspection copies of the book and purchase the book from the Heinemann website. Click on the following link for more details.

… but different
The six topics are covered in greater depth than the more numerous AS topics. More space is given to setting out the science explanations because the specification includes new science that students are unlikely to have met before.
A feature of all the topics in the A2 course is that they focus on ‘science in the making’. To bring this to life our authors have included descriptions of the work of active research scientists, based on interviews with them. This not only helps to make the topics relevant but demonstrates how varied the life of a scientist can be. These examples of scientists at work have been carefully chosen to illustrate the reality of how science works and the issues it raises.
